One of the most common questions I receive from my readers is about non-toxic mattresses. I have worked with the team at Naturepedic dating back to my advocacy days in Washington D.C., and I couldn’t be happier about their product and incredible brand. For this reason, I reached out to their team to see if they would be willing to partner on a sponsored series. They said yes, so in full disclosure this series is sponsored, but is entirely my own opinion on the company and their products.
Why Do I Need a Non-Toxic Mattress?
Most people are still unaware of the fact that toxic chemicals, like really toxic chemicals, are commonly used in mattresses. Flame retardants are a class of chemicals that some scientists call “the new lead” for their impacts on the developing brain, links to cancer, liver damage and hormone disruption. In addition, flame retardants don’t actually prevent or slow the spread of fires and they are persistent in our bodies and the environment.
Many conventional mattresses use materials and chemicals that are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which “off gas”, I’m sure you’ve purchased a pillow or mattress that was really smelly? Follow your nose, these are materials to be avoided.
How Naturepedic Got its Start
Naturepedic was founded by Barry Cik, an environmental engineer who has spent his career understanding how chemicals behave and impact our health. When he was expecting a new grandchild, he set out to find the highest quality mattress on the market. According to Barry,
“I knew all about vinyl/PVC, polyurethane foam, and the various chemicals contained in them, and there was no way I was going to put my grandchild to sleep within a few inches of these chemicals. All of the organic baby crib mattresses on the market were not waterproof… if the mattress were to get wet, it would grow mold and fungus without any effective way to clean it.”
And so seeing the need for a mattress that would meet the needs of babies, but was also made with safe materials, Barry and his two sons set out to start Naturepedic. Since then, they have expanded their product line to include adult mattresses, kids mattresses, changing pads, pillows and much more.
What Makes Their Mattresses Stand Out
- They are so comfortable!
- Made entirely with non-toxic materials (not common in the mattress industry, some companies will selectively use some non-toxic materials, but Naturepedic is the real deal, down to every stitch)
- No polyurethane foam
- No VOCs
- No Vinyl
- No flame retardant chemicals
- GOTS certified organic fabric (naturally flame resistant!)
- Hand made in the USA (by Amish craftsmen in Chagrin Falls, Ohio)
- They have received the most awards and certifications of any organic/safe mattress company!
Why It’s Worth the Money
I know these mattresses are at a premium price, but think about how much time you and your family spend in bed. We spend so much energy seeking out foods that are organic, invest in clean beauty products, and non-toxic household cleaners. And then we spend eight hours a day breathing in the materials that make up your mattress. Your health counts and mattresses last a lonnnngggg time.
This is an area worth investing.

A Company Willing to Use Their Voice for Change
As I mentioned in the beginning, I first was introduced to Barry Cik, the CEO and Founder of Naturepedic when I was working in Washington D.C. He was a business ally who was not only willing to speak up personally about the need for more regulations over toxic chemicals, he testified, lobbied and leveraged the power of the Naturepedic brand to protect people.
In an age where so much of business is about fighting to maintain the status quo, I can help but want to support a brand that leverages their business voice to make this world a better place, rather than fighting to maximize profits.
