You know that eating organic is good for the earth and the farmworkers who grow the food, but what about your body? A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Research, found a correlation between eating an organic diet and one’s pesticide exposure levels.
Links between pesticide exposure from food and what gets in our bodies is a growing field of science. The researchers set out to study fourteen different pesticides commonly used on produce, and tested four racially and geographically diverse families (16 people in total). For the first half of the study, participants ate their conventional diet and for the second half, they ate only organic foods, including spices, beverages, and condiments.
What the study found:
- Families found a significant decrease in pesticides in their bodies after switching to an organic diet
- This is particularly true of 13 of the 14 pesticides studied
- The largest reduction was from the following pesticides: malathion, clothianidin, and chlorpyrifos
Here is yet another study showing that what we put on and in our bodies matters.

Are the pesticides tested for in the article only pesticides used in traditional farming? If they are only looking for those residues and not residues from organic approved pesticides then you’re only going to find them and not the organic pesticide residues. Are the levels of residues found dangerous?
I agree that pesticide residue is an important issue, the heart of the study is looking at conventional vs organic produce, and not assessing residue.
