Ethical and sustainable fashion may be on the upswing, but shoes are often left out of the conversation. Nisolo, an ethical shoe company based in Nashville, makes beautiful shoes while supporting a supply chain you can trust. (I have their Ecuador Huarache Sandal and loveeeee them. Currently saving up for the Emma D’Orsay Oxford)
For those of you who have watched A True Cost, a documentary about the humanitarian crises associated with our fashion industry, you’ll know that it’s time for us to invest in companies doing the right thing. When it comes to treating workers with respect, dignity and proper pay, Nisolo does just that.
Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links and Nisolo gifted me the Ecuador Huarache Sandal. All opinions are my own, I only write about brands I love and trust.
Nisolo is a Certified B Corporation, putting it at the gold standard level of responsible businesses. But things get even cooler when you start to dive into their Impact Report, which features how they set up their business and most important, how they treat and pay the artisan shoe makers who create their products. I took a deep dive into their Shoe Reclamation Program, which allows you to send old shoes back, and then they are repaired and sold back into communities in need of shoes and income opportunities.
About their dedication to ethical manufacturing:
- Their producers get paid wages that exceed fair trade standards, but 27% in fact!
- They receive health care and a safe work environment
- All workers are on contract, which ensures them a stable job which is rare in the industry
- Women producers found an average of 173% increase in salary from previous employment
- All workers are 18 years or older
