How to Spot Greenwashing of Non-Toxic Crib Mattresses & Changing Pads

Your baby spends a lot of time sleeping during their first years of life (especially when they are newborns), so selecting a non-toxic baby crib mattress and changing pad is of the utmost importance. As I outlined in a recent article about the highest quality non-toxic adult mattress on the market, if there is one area to spend a little bit more money, this is it.

There is a significant amount of greenwashing in the industry (as there is with so many industries) so I’ve broken down what to look for when shopping for a truly non-toxic crib mattress and changing pad.

After an exhaustive search for the best non-toxic baby mattress and changing pad, I reached out to Naturepedic, the company that rose to the top of the list each time I did my homework. This article is part of a three part sponsored series by Naturepedic, and all of the views, opinions and research are my own. You can trust that I only recommend brands that I’ve worked with personally and have properly vetted!

Materials to avoid when selecting a crib mattress

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Any plastic/material with the word vinyl in it
  • Any company who won’t tell you the full list of materials used to make their mattress
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • Polyurethane foam (including “soy foam, green foam and eco-foam”—see more on this below)
  • All flame retardant chemicals, commonly used in baby mattresses and changing pads
  • Latex

What you want in your non-toxic baby mattress and changing pad

(Hint, Naturepedic checks every box!)

    • Food grade polyethelene waterproofing (rather than vinyl)
    • No flame retardants
    • Organic materials (GOTS certified, you may need to call the manufacturer to see if the whole product uses GOTS certified materials, versus one small piece. Naturepedic mattresses are entirely GOTS certified.)
    • MADE SAFE certification (used to confirm that the product is truly non-toxic)
    • GREENGUARD GOLD certification

How to spot “greenwashing”

Greenwashing is a term to describe when companies use deceptive marketing tactics to make their products seem more green or “non-toxic” than they actually are. This is common in the beauty industry, food industry and the home goods category.

Things to consider:

  • If something contains less than 70% organic ingredients, it can’t be labeled as organic
  • Products containing between 70% and 95% organic ingredients can use the phrase “made with organic ingredients”
  • Look for certifications since the terms “natural” and “non-toxic” are not regulated in the mattress industry
  • The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) organic certification is great, but note that the logo can be used even if  only part of the product is certified organic! For Naturepedic, in addition to using certified organic components, the entire crib mattress is also certified by the GOTS standard.
  • Beware of terms like “green foam”, “soy foam” or “eco-foam”, these are usually polyurethane foam (which you want to avoid) with some plant oil mixed in

Naturepedic rises to the top of my list

For all the reasons listed above, in addition to the lifetime guarantee, Naturepedic is my top recommendation for crib mattresses and changing pads. I encourage you to read more about their work to help pass laws that will protect people from toxic chemicals and dedication to U.S. based manufacturing in my other article HERE.

So I hope this information helps you find a truly non-toxic organic crib mattress or changing pad, where you can rest easy knowing that your little one is protected and safe.
