Gift Giving for the Minimalist Mom-to-Be

So your friend is pregnant and you’re so excited to get her a gift to celebrate bringing a new life into this world. But there’s a catch, your friend is a minimalist, lives in a small space, or generally doesn’t like a lot of clutter.

When you’re expecting, managing well intentioned gifts is challenging, so here are some ideas for the perfect gift. (And if you’re expecting, you can share this with your friends and family for some ideas!)

No gift

A nice hand written card or flowers can be a simple and meaningful way to celebrate.

This company provides a Basics Basic bundle which is four simple pieces of maternity wear that last you the entire pregnancy. This means you can wear the pencil skirt at 16 or 36 weeks. Each piece is simple and black and white, so it can be universally matched and would reduce the amount of maternity clothes your friend would need to buy.

Offer to host a “hand-me-down” shower

Being a “minimalist” often goes hand in hand with being a conscious consumer. Being a new parent requires a lot of new products and things in your life: strollers, bottle warmers, clothes and furniture. Consider hosting a baby shower where people can bring a hand-me-down, something their children have out grown.

As the host you’ll have to coordinate to make sure people don’t bring the same thing, but this is a great way to have the guests save some money, free up closet space, and it prevents the purchasing new products that require nature’s precious resources to make.

For any guests who don’t have children of their own, they can bring a check for the baby’s college fund…

Donate to a college or nanny fund

A check to add to baby’s future college fund is tremendously helpful, but doesn’t take up space! Similar with postpartum care, which is expensive, many families are more willing to take on the expense if they are gifted funds to help offset the costs. More on why postpartum care helped my transition to motherhood HERE.

Finding a gift for a friend who’s expecting can be easy. Or if you’re expecting and consider yourself a minimalist, share this list with your friends and family!
