Looking for a non-toxic mattress, but unsure where to start? Below you will find a list of various mattress brands, at different price points, to help you find an option that is safer for your family.
It is so encouraging to see how this market has grown in the last five to ten years; for a long time the only brand I could point people to was Naturepedic and now there are many different flame retardant free mattresses to choose from. This is due to the power of the consumer, asking tough questions of the companies we buy from!
You will see recommendations for spring box/built mattresses and low VOC memory foam, since there are varying preferences and this allows me to recommend more affordable options. None of these brands use chemical flame retardants to treat the mattress, which is my biggest concern!
I have also added a few baby mattress recommendations here as well.

Why Do I Need a Non-Toxic Mattress?
Most people are still unaware of the fact that toxic chemicals, like really toxic chemicals, are commonly used in mattresses. Flame retardants are a class of chemicals that some scientists call “the new lead” for their impacts on the developing brain, links to cancer, liver damage and hormone disruption. In addition, flame retardants don’t actually prevent or slow the spread of fires and they are persistent in our bodies and the environment.
Many conventional mattresses use materials and chemicals that are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which “off gas”, I’m sure you’ve purchased a pillow or mattress that was really smelly? Follow your nose, these are materials to be avoided.
I have a mattress protector over my mattress. So does it really matter if my mattress has toxins in it if the mattress has a protector over it? It’s completely encased and zipped up.
